Electoral mis-/dis-information

Context

The stakes are high for democracy in 2024. Almost 50% of the world population will be headed to the polls in at least 64 countries, resulting in a historic election year globally. This is against a backdrop of a persisting trend of democratic backsliding, an ever-evolving digital landscape with rising misinformation and disinformation, as well as the shrinking of civic space in many parts of the world. For the third time since 2021, world leaders will be gathering in Seoul in less than a month to discuss the future of democracy at the 2024 Summit for Democracy (S4D).

Looking inward at the electoral context here in Canada and recognizing the pivotal role of civil society in safeguarding democratic values, Cooperation Canada’s Nik Parent and Andy Ouedraogo organized a virtual dialogue aimed at exploring the nuanced challenges of electoral mis-/dis-information, with a specific focus on North America. This was the result of a partnership with the Latin American and Caribbean Network for Democracy (REDLAD), host of this year’s S4D Regional Event for the Americas taking place in Santo Domingo between March11th and March 13th, 2024.

The insights collected from our virtual consultation, along with inputs from consultations held globally, were relayed in Santo Domingo, contributing to the outcomes of the Summit and our shared goal of countering the erosion of democracy.
